perceptions from a critical commentary
Nov 7, 2003
incidentally picked up a critical commentary of joyces...Ulysses....from british council.....a truly mindblowing work of the literary genius like no other...
the basic structure is borrowed from aristotles De Anima...or Psychology....wherein the leitmotif is thought and soul....( thought is the thought of thought..tranquil brightness..soul is the form of forms...tranquility vast, sudden, candescent....)...the basic logic is that...everything in the universe no matter how large or small has a soul of its own....wherein the identity of the object is fully realised..ie in its soul....the highest action of the mind is thought...whatever is perceived and identified by the intellect is mirrored in our souls...the intellect has the potential to perceive anything and everything ...therefore ideally everything can be contained in our souls..everything that hasnt been recognised by our intellect is present as the potentiality of our souls.....all of these ideas were born out of diferences with his teacher plato who argued that the soul has no death and is separable from the body which aristotle vehemently denies....saying soul cant be separated from the body..since the soul is present only through the intellect....the intellect is separable into active and passive intellect...the passive intellect mirrors the soul and active intelllect does all the thinking....and can think of everything and anything....thus only active intellect has no death......
the narrative is classic Bruno....most of it based on brunos...cause, principle and unity....bruno shares the ideas of soul as conceived by aristotle but is vehemently against aristotle because though aristotle has recognised the soul as an individual entity..when the souls are added ad infinitum they form a world soul....similarly the intellects form a universal intellect.....bruno believes the world soul to be a mirror image of god..and believes that aristotle deliberately overlooked this possibility out of sheer vanity...( aristotle was an anti theologist..atheist freak..).. ironically the tenets of christianity are based on aristotles doctrines....and bruno was burned as a heretic though he was an ardent mystic....joyce identified himself with bruno who lived 10 to 20 years before him....believed that the whole world was against him..( actually ireland...) and that he was destined to be a bruno...though joyce abdicated christianity at the age of 15....
the main inspiration from bruno is the idea of coincidence in contraries.....bruno believed that all things large or small..had some part of the world soul..ie the world soul is manifested in every creation as its soul.. be it the milky way or a molecule...hence though the creations are contrasting...they are essentially the same....ie though the souls are distinctly individual they are identical......an example is thus proposed....
no two things can be more contrasting than a straight line and a circle...yet the minimum of an arc and a straight line are identical....the maximum of a circle ( at infinity...) is a straight line....therefore the circle and the straight line coincide in contraries...through existence in various degrees from min to max....therefore every entity, the milky way or the tiniest molecule are identical since they posses some part of the world soul in varying degrees.....this is best described by the extract...
Of the eons of geological periods recorded in the stratifications of the earth, of the myriad entomological organic existences concealed in the cavities of the earth, beneath removable stones, in hives and mounds of microbes, germs, bacteria bacilli, Of the incalculable trillions of billions of millions of imperceptible molecules contained by cohesion of molecular affinity in a single pinhead of the universe, Of human serum constellated with red and white bodies, themselves universes of void space constellated with other bodies, each in continuity its universe of divisible component bodies of which each was again divisible in divisions of redivisible component bodies, dividends and divisors ever diminishing without actual division till, If the progress were carried far enough, nought nowhere was never reached....this smallest remainder which exists...( nought is not reached anywhere...) was coined as QUARK by joyce in his following work...Finnigans Wake...and that is a contribution to physics by metaphysics....
this technique of coincidence in contraries is used by joyce throughout the characterisation......through a single character at a particular time and place....he extrapolates to portray nearly 1000 characters as figments of the protogonists imagination....and by reverse through all the other characters he portrays a single character..whose characteristic exists in the souls of all others.....ulysses is an apt name..since it is a universal story...and the hero of homers odyssey..ulysses....had done everything that was to be done in the world....in a sense the ideal perigrenator....thus joyce intrapolates the protogonist into the odyssey of homer...though the setting is now 19th century ireland....the trials and tribulations are the same thus lending credence to a timeless epic......
ironically there are two protogonists....a literary teacher who was a student of aristotles teachings and.. a struggling writer...his student who wants to change the ways of humanity towards worship of the highest form...worship of artistic intellect.....both the protogonists are based on joyce himself....the teacher..his struggling past that cannot come to terms with present...the student his present with a buring ambition for the future......other influences in this work are.....hamlet, dantes divine comedy, old man and the sea, robinson crusoe..to name a few....
but the work is truly universal since it encompasses the world soul and universal intellect in a timeless classic as ulysses' adventures with borrowed symbolism and realism from aristotle, coincidences of contraries from bruno, vernacular and ideas of soul in the other worlds per se hell, limbo and paradise from dante and hellenism of arnold and a constant father son relationship between the two protogonists...the teacher and the student ( both portrayed simultaneously on joyce...another incidence of coincidences in contraries..) borrowed from hamlet.....

Another post..confirmin' the bibilipohile in ya
'tho didn't reach till the very end.
no one ever has reached its end...this was a seminal book and all of my thought process stems from this...
Did seem like tht to me.Great influence tht book sure does hv.
Whens the next post coming?
Its the flagrance of the mind, which causes the interpretation provided and accepted. The days of the men who dwelt to admire the artistic intellect reached an abrupt termination, when the forthright evidence to the existence of the life was provided in the form of constantly evolving particles.
The mind is a sinner that profligates thoughts of fantasy through men. There is unambiguously a message that it is sending through, which is miscontrued and spread.
I am not denying the existence of artistic intellect, but his potraits seem all merged into the spectrum of gory white.
mind warp is nothing new...theoretically intellect knows no bounds....and souls swim through ether...call it intelligent design (sic) or pure happenstance...the intellect is imprisoned by the soma...and the best it can come up with is white noise...but hey...its still progress
Progress into turning invisible terminates the plot of existence!
one exists on a metaphysical level mate...physical tangible existence is watered down essence of the karmayogi...
